Martian equatorial flow are dry !

The most intriguing geomorphological feature of Mars has been re-interpreted to be water free. The seasonally active equatorial dark flows called Recurring Slope Linae (RSL) have been identified in 2011 and the current explanation of their formation involves liquid water. The presence of RSL features on Mars is the main argument for present time habitability on the Red Planet. The study carried out by an international team led by Frédéric Schmidt, composed of researcher from Géosciences Paris Sud (Université Paris Sud, CNRS) and Slovak Academy of Sciences (Comenius University), is based on numerical simulations of an exotic process that only occurs at very low pressure, such as on Mars. Due to solar illumination, the soil acts as a pump that can destabilize the grains and causes the flow. The seasonality of this modeled mechanism is coherent with all observations so far. This study shows that present Mars is not as habitable as previously thought.

In September 2015, based on several publications, NASA HQ communicated about the discovery of liquid water in form of brines (salty water) at present time, in dark Martian flow features, called Recurrent Slope Linae (or RSL). The habitability of current Mars was dramatically modify by this discovery. Previously, Mars was thought to be favorable for life in the old past only (few billions of years). Since the RSL observation, a significant part of the science community took the briny model as a plausible explanation and many researches were oriented to refine the brines hypothesis and to study the present time habitability (experimental chemistry, laboratory geomorphology, astrobiology,…).

The main argument for liquid water is the fact that RSL are active today in the warmest places on Mars, in the closest conditions to the triple point of water. In addition, spectroscopic signatures of salt were reported but there are only indirect (no formal liquid water detection). Nevertheless, several recent studies demonstrated that the source of water near the equator to explain all observed RSL is highly implausible: neither internal sources nor atmospheric sources are realistic. The origin of those flows were mysterious.

The team proposed a new mechanism based on Knudsen pump that is totally dry and only active in the warmest places of Mars today (figure 2). Due to temperature variation in the soil, gas can flow in the porous space. After few minutes of shading from a neighbouring boulder, the gas flow is intense enough to destabilize the granular material and induce a flow.This process has been modeled and the predicted activity is compatible with the observed RSL activity.

Considering that RSLs are the main features proposed to form in presence of liquid water at present time, this exotic process of natural pump argues against the presence of liquid water today on Mars. This new findings have an obvious impact on the possibility of finding life on Mars today, but also draw the portrait of a Red Planet inhospitable for human exploration.
